Caherconnel Stone Fort

Caherconnel Stone Fort

West Ireland | County Clare

Caherconnell is a very well-preserved stone ring fort located in the Burren region in County Clare. It is a dry-stone structure with a diameter of 40 m, which makes it one of the largest ring forts in Ireland. The walls are up to 3 m high but in its heydays had a height of 4 m. These impressive proportions suggest that it was built and occupied by a very important family. Fort was built between the early 10th and mid-12th centuries and has been continuously occupied up until the 14th century. It was probably abandoned until the late 15th or early 16th centuries. After the Caherconnell was settled again, a small rectangular house was built in the northern part of the fort. Archaeological excavations have been carried out since 2007 and revealed a drystone circular chamber with a short passage at the northeast. Artifacts found in the chamber, such as flint flakes, tools, pieces of prehistoric pottery, and a broken polished stone ax indicate that the site was already inhabited in the Early Bronze Age. Caherconnell is also home to Archeology Field School, which in partnership with the National University of Ireland in Galway provides outstanding archaeological experiences within the unique Burren region. Another attraction of the fort is the amazing demonstration of herding dogs. There is also a visitor center with a coffee shop and an audio-visual presentation.
